Opera
The Mercer University Opera allows students to develop as singing actors through stage movement and interpretation techniques. A colorful repertoire of musical theatre — ranging from opera to Broadway musicals — culminates in first-class staged and costumed productions. Recent opera productions have included The Merry Widow, Idomeneo, Iolanthe, The Last Sorcerer, as well as other staged opera revues. Many vocal majors also audition for and earn parts in Mercer University Theatre co-produced with Mercer University Opera. Recent projects have included Fiddler on the Roof and A Little Night Music.
Students who wish to participate in Mercer University Opera productions must have permission of the director and should enroll in Opera Workshop. Although the course is designed to help students integrate their acting and singing skills, participation is not limited to voice majors. Students enrolled will audition at the beginning of the semester and will be given roles appropriate to their abilities. Students assume responsibility for some technical aspects of the production in addition to performing (set construction, operation of lighting equipment, stagehands, etc.).
