Make a Musical Difference at Mercer

Gary GerberThe Townsend School of Music is a place where you are can make a difference with your music and artistry through tradition, instruction, excellence, and innovation.

Mercer has a rich tradition of musical excellence. The university was founded in 1835, when Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Schumann were composing some of their greatest works. Mercer’s musical tradition is founded on faculty and students from decades of musical excellence, dedication, and performance.

The music faculty are some of the most diverse and professionally trained in the country. Many travel to Mercer from well-known symphonies and institutes to teach our students. The faculty will encourage, motivate, and prepare you for a thrilling and enjoyable musical experience.

The faculty instruction and ensemble experience at Mercer is on a level that is un-matched at the collegiate level in the region. Music majors enjoy a quality of literature that will push them to achieve music they never thought possible. Music making at Mercer is an important part of your musical education. Several guest artists present concerts and masterclasses each year to inspire, instruct and motivate our campus.

Today’s musicians must be prepared for a changing society. Innovative courses in music business and new media assist in the extra-musical preparation. Our graduates are singers at the Metropolitan Opera, conductors in collegiate programs, organists in leading churches, teachers in secondary schools, and collaborative pianists, instrumentalists, and singers in some of the country’s most prestigious graduate schools.

Visit our campus and tour our state-of-the-art McCorkle Music Building. Talk with our students and faculty to discover why the Townsend School of Music offers the Mercer Difference.
