Community Music Programs
Townsend School of Music invests in the lives of musicians, young and old, in our community through Community Arts Programs. This important outreach gives community musicians access to work and learn with professional faculty artists who lead these vocal music programs.
Choral Society of Middle Georgia
The Choral Society of Middle Georgia is a community organization of singer-musicians from the central Georgia area. Originally founded as the Macon Civic Chorale, the Choral Society has provided inspiring choral concerts since 1975. With three major concerts each year, the choir explores a wide range of choral styles but is dedicated to performing choral/orchestral works. Stanley L. Roberts, Arthur Lowndes Rich Professor of Choral Conducting, is the conductor and artistic director.
Mercer University Youth Choirs
Founded in September 2005, the Mercer University Youth Choir is a community arts initiative of Mercer University's Townsend School of Music. The Mercer University Youth Choirs involves 65 singers in four auditioned choirs. The Preparatory Choir (ages 8 - 10) is a training choir that performs a limited number of concerts in Middle Georgia. The aim of the Preparatory Choir is to help young singers develop healthy singing and performance skills in an enjoyable, yet structured environment. The Touring Choir (ages 10 - 18) is a performance choir that sings throughout Georgia and conducts an annual out-of-state concert tour. The singers learn to read music, to use proper vocal technique, to develop creativity, to form healthy relationships, and to share their artistic gifts with the community. Membership in the Exultemus and Cantiamo Choirs is determined by seniority and musical ability
DUE TO THE SARS-CoV-2 GLOBAL PANDEMIC (COVID-19), MERCER UNIVERSITY YOUTH CHOIRS WILL NOT MEET DURING THE 2020 – 2021 ACADEMIC YEAR. PLEASE WATCH THIS SPACE FOR FURTHER UPDATES REGARDING FUTURE MUYC ACTIVITIES.
